Spontaneous Asian-ing

I just started singing a Chinese nursery rhyme to one of the kids I babysit - and I didn't realize I was singing in Mandarin!

WHOA.

That's pretty impressive... the only rhyme I know as a kid was Rock-a-bye baby. Go figure!

what's all the fasian-ing about

Back in senior year of high school, my Asian-ness was challenged by my AP English Lit teacher. During our study of Kingston's Woman Warrior, he wrote the character for "woman/girl/female" on the chalkboard. In a rare moment of paying attention, I pointed out that it was written backwards. He said: "Are you sure? I asked a real Chinese person about it."

Thus, the fasian* was born, created, and perpetuated. For most of my life, I have actively avoided being a proper first-gen Asian-American. Am I having a quarter-life change of heart?

*Fasian = "Fake + Asian"
**Fasian-ista = "Fashion-ista - (hio +ia)"
